How I Decorated Our Breakfast Nook for Halloween

There’s something about decorating a small space for Halloween that makes it feel extra cozy. Our breakfast nook is already one of my favorite little corners of our home, so this year I wanted to give it a Halloween makeover without completely changing everything that was already here.

I kept the warm wood tones, gallery wall and everyday furniture and layered in some spooky touches with a vintage feel. A skeleton, ghost pillows, fall leaves, Halloween artwork and the cutest nostalgic tablecloth were really all it took.

A lot of my decor changes from year to year, so I rounded up similar pieces to help you recreate the look.

Starting With a Vintage Halloween Tablecloth

The tablecloth really set the tone for the whole nook this year. I love Halloween decor that feels a little nostalgic, and the patchwork of pumpkins, black cats, owls and old-fashioned Halloween illustrations gives me exactly that look.

It also brought in all the colors I wanted to use throughout the room: faded orange, black, cream and a little bit of muted blue.

Because there’s already so much pattern on the table, I kept the centerpiece really simple with a large cream vase and black Halloween stems. I love the contrast of the black against all those warm fall colors.

Adding a Skeleton to the Breakfast Nook

Of course, I needed at least one slightly ridiculous Halloween decoration.

Instead of standing the skeleton in a corner, I sat him right on the built-in bench like he belongs there!

I surrounded him with a mix of ghost pillows, plaid and warm fall colors. The skeleton and ghosts make it unmistakably Halloween, but the softer colors keep everything feeling cozy rather than overly spooky.

This is also one of my favorite ways to decorate seasonally. I don’t necessarily want to replace everything in a room for each holiday. Adding a few really noticeable pieces to what I already have makes a much bigger impact with a lot less work.

Adding Halloween Art to an Existing Gallery Wall

Instead of taking down my gallery wall, I worked Halloween right into it.

I added a few small vintage-inspired Halloween prints and draped black and cream gauze over some of the existing frames. I love that it looks a little messy and cobwebby rather than perfectly styled.

The smaller Halloween artwork is probably one of the easiest ideas from this room to recreate. You don’t need a whole Halloween gallery wall. Just swapping a few little prints into frames you already own can completely change the look for the season.

Layering in Fall Garland

One thing I didn’t want was for every single decoration to scream Halloween.

I used fall leaf garland over the window and around the dining light to bring in more orange, rust and gold. It warms up the whole nook and ties in beautifully with the colors in the tablecloth.

And unlike the skeletons and ghosts, the leaves can stay right where they are through Thanksgiving.

I love mixing regular fall decor with Halloween pieces for exactly that reason. It makes the room feel more layered and cozy, and when Halloween is over I don’t have to strip the entire room bare.

A Cozy Halloween Nook

I think that’s what I love most about how this little space came together. It’s definitely Halloween, but it still feels like our home.

I didn’t change the furniture or completely redo the gallery wall. I just layered Halloween into what was already here with a fun tablecloth, spooky artwork, a skeleton, ghost pillows, black flowers and lots of fall color.

It’s a little spooky, a little nostalgic and still cozy enough for everyday breakfasts around the table.
